Every crossing involves movement.

And movement eventually requires a decision:

What comes with me—and what doesn't?

As you begin recognizing where you are, you may also become aware of things that no longer fit.

Patterns.

Expectations.

Commitments.

Habits.

Relationships or relational dynamics.

Ways of thinking.

Ways of working.

Perhaps even ways you've learned to define yourself.

Some of these may have served an important purpose in an earlier season of your life.

Others may have developed simply because life happened—and you adapted.

There is no need to condemn any of it.

But there comes a point when we have to ask:

Does this still belong where I'm going?

YOU CAN'T CARRY EVERYTHING ACROSS

Imagine beginning a long journey while carrying every possession you've ever accumulated.

At first, you might convince yourself that you need all of it.

But eventually the weight would begin determining how far—and how freely—you could travel.

Life can work the same way.

We accumulate more than possessions.

We accumulate obligations, assumptions, routines, disappointments, expectations, fears, unfinished decisions, outdated goals, and definitions of success.

We can become so accustomed to carrying them that we stop noticing their weight.

That's why this part of Orientation matters.

Before asking what you want more of, we're going to make room by identifying what you may want less of.

WHAT DO YOU WANT LESS OF?

Don't immediately look for dramatic changes.

Start with your everyday life.

What would you genuinely like to experience less often?

Perhaps it's:

rushing from one responsibility to another;
saying yes when you really want to say no;
constantly reacting instead of intentionally choosing;
comparison;
distraction;
clutter;
overcommitment;
unnecessary conflict;
work that consumes enormous energy while producing little meaning;
habits that repeatedly steal your attention;
relationships or expectations that require you to continually become someone you're not;
fear of disappointing people;
waiting until everything is perfect before beginning.

Your answer may be something entirely different.

The important thing is to notice it.

SOME THINGS AREN'T BAD—THEY'RE JUST NO LONGER YOURS

This distinction matters.

We often assume that something must be wrong before we're allowed to release it.

That's not true.

A role can be good and still be complete.

A goal can once have mattered and no longer represent who you're becoming.

A way of working can have produced success while now preventing growth.

A commitment can have been appropriate when you made it but need reconsideration as circumstances change.

Even an identity that once helped you understand yourself can become too small for what you're discovering.

Growth doesn't always require rejecting the past.

Sometimes it simply means recognizing:

That brought me here. It doesn't have to take me there.

NOTICE THE PATTERNS

Now look beneath individual circumstances.

Is there a pattern underneath some of the things you'd like to leave behind?

Maybe you repeatedly:

Overcommit.

Avoid difficult conversations.

Wait for permission.

Start but don't finish.

Stay busy so you don't have to decide what matters most.

Measure yourself against other people.

Shrink your ideas because you're afraid they might fail.

Keep doing something because you've already invested so much in it.

Allow urgency to determine your priorities.

Again, we're not looking for reasons to criticize yourself.

We're looking for information.

Patterns become much easier to change once we can see them.

WHAT IS IT COSTING YOU?

Choose one thing you identified and ask:

What does continuing to carry this cost me?

Maybe it costs time.

Energy.

Attention.

Peace.

Money.

Creativity.

Relationships.

Opportunity.

Confidence.

Or simply space—the space necessary for something else to grow.

Then ask a second question:

If this occupied less space in my life, what might become possible?

Notice the shift.

We're no longer focused primarily on what you're leaving.

We're beginning to see what you're making room for.

RELEASE DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN REMOVAL

Leaving something behind doesn't necessarily mean abruptly quitting a job, ending a relationship, abandoning a responsibility, or making a major life decision today.

Sometimes the first crossing is internal.

You may need to leave behind an expectation while remaining in the same role.

You may need to change a boundary rather than end a relationship.

You may need to stop allowing one responsibility to consume energy that belongs elsewhere.

You may need to release an old definition of success.

Or you may simply need to acknowledge:

This needs to change.

That's enough for today.

Orientation is about discovery before major decisions.

We're learning to see.

MAKE IT PERSONAL

Now add another snapshot to the discoveries you're keeping from Orientation.

Complete these statements as honestly and simply as you can:

[gap_crossers_leave_behind]

Keep these answers with the Current Location Snapshot you completed in the previous lesson.

Don't try to turn them into an action plan yet.

We're still collecting evidence.

For now, simply notice the relationship between the final two statements:

What is this costing me?

and

What might become possible if it occupied less space?

That's an important contrast.

Because sometimes what we want more of becomes clearer when we recognize what we're ready to carry less of.

And that's exactly where we're going next.

YOUR NEXT STEP

In the next lesson, What Do You Want More Of?, we'll shift our attention from what you're ready to release toward what you want to cultivate.

Not simply more possessions, accomplishments, or activity.

We're going to begin asking what you want more of in your life, work, relationships, growth, and contribution—and what those desires may reveal about where you're headed.
